Our Girls With Goals focussed GCSE Options Evening took place last week and proved to be a valuable and informative event for students and their families as they begin to consider subject choices for Key Stage 4.

The evening was carefully designed to guide girls through the GCSE options process, offering clarity, reassurance and expert support at this important stage of their academic journey.

Students had the opportunity to speak directly with Heads of Department about individual GCSE courses. These discussions enabled girls to explore course content, assessment structures and the skills required for success at GCSE level. Teaching staff were available throughout the evening to answer subject-specific questions and to explain how each course builds on learning from Key Stage 3.

Current and former GCSE students also played an important role in the event. By sharing their own experiences, they offered honest and practical insight into studying GCSE subjects, managing workload and developing effective study habits. Hearing first-hand accounts helped to bring subjects to life and provided younger students with a realistic understanding of GCSE study.

The Careers Department supported families throughout the evening, offering guidance on how GCSE subject choices link to future pathways. Discussions focused on keeping options open, preparing for A Level study and understanding how different subjects can support future university and career aspirations.

Girls also heard presentations from senior academic staff, who outlined the GCSE options process and explained how Edgbaston High School supports students through informed decision-making, academic balance and wellbeing. These talks reinforced the school’s commitment to providing personalised guidance at every stage.

There was ample opportunity for parents and students to ask questions about Key Stage 4 and GCSE study more broadly. Overall, the GCSE Options Evening was a positive and supportive event, reflecting the school’s commitment to helping every girl make confident, well-informed choices for the future.
